US President Donald Trump might be facing a lawsuit due to this
US President Donald Trump might be facing a lawsuit after security forces fired rubber bullets, sound cannons, and chemical irritants to clear protesters outside the White House.
This, as civil rights groups in the United States filed a case against US President Donald Trump on Thursday (US time).
Law enforcement officers on Monday (US time) in the United States forced protesters back before Donald Trump walked to a nearby church for a photo op that divided the US in the middle of a nationwide protest over George Floyd’s death in police custody.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), as well as other groups, accused Trump and top officials of violating the constitutional rights of #BlackLivesMatter campaigners as well as individual protesters. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, law enforcement officers in the US conducted a “coordinated and unprovoked charge” in the crowd of protesters and deployed several rounds of rubber bullets, sound cannons, and chemical irritants.
St. John’s Episcopal Church — which was located across the street from Lafayette Park — had been the focus of protests in Washington as the church was vandalized with graffiti and damaged in a fire during the protests.
Scott Michelman, the legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union, said that Trump’s “frankly criminal attack on protesters” just because Trump disagreed with the protesters’ views “shakes the foundation of our nation’s constitutional order”.
However, Atty. General Bill Barr defended the security forces, saying that clearing the protesters in the said area wasn’t linked to Donald Trump walking to St John’s Episcopal Church.
