Twitter added warning labels to tweets from US President Donald Trump and the White House.
Twitter rapidly increased its confrontation with United States President Donald Trump as it added warning labels to two tweets by Trump and the White House accounts.
This, as Donald Trump tweeted on Friday and said “when the looting starts, the shooting starts” — which was retweeted by the White House account — amidst the unrest in Minnesota. Twitter then prevented users from viewing Trump’s tweet and the White House’s tweet without reading a brief notice that the said post was about “glorifying violence”.
This was the first time that Twitter had applied a warning label on any public figure’s tweet. The decision to apply warning labels was approved by the Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey following a late-night debate among company officials, according to a person with knowledge of the deliberations.
Twitter’s action came after United States President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order seeking to deprive social media companies of legal immunity for content on their respective platforms. However, Twitter publicly opposed the said order and called it a “reactionary” and “politicized” approach to a landmark law as it fueled tension with Trump that had exploded this week.
With this, Twitter further strengthened restrictions from Donald Trump and the White House by way of blocking users from liking or replying to their accounts.
Twitter had said that the company will continue adding warning labels and restrictions on tweets that would encourage violence or even spreading false information or fake news about elections and the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19.
