Mayors in Metro Manila were eyeing to have an additional 15-day ECQ extension in NCR, according to the council’s chairman.
Mayors in Metro Manila were targeting to have an additional 15-day extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the National Capital Region (NCR).
This, as the Metro Manila Council may recommend the ECQ extension to the Philippine government in view of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
Paranaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez, the chairman of the Metro Manila Council, said that the council may formalize the recommendation via resolution during their virtual meeting on Saturday. He also stressed that the additional 15-day ECQ extension may be required in order to prevent the “second wave” of coronavirus infections in the Philippines.
Olivares added that mayors favored a metro-wide extension because the cities and municipalities in Metro Manila were “very interconnected“, which means, residents living in one city and working in another city. He also said that the decision on whether or not to extend the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila will depend on the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-MEID).
The recommendation came as President Rodrigo Duterte, through Executive Order No. 112 dated May 1, 2020, approved the extension of the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila until May 15, 2020.
