Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. proposed the gradual lifting of ECQ in the Philippines.
Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., the chief implementer of the Philippine government’s COVID-19 response, recommended the gradual lifting of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the country.
Citing World Health Organization’s statement, Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said in an IATF meeting — which was aired on Tuesday morning — that the lifting of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in the country should be carried out gradually and “in a phased manner” in order to prevent the resurgence of COVID-19 or coronavirus disease.
He also said that a strong and resilient system — such as testing and tracing — should be in place in order to prevent the resurgence of COVID-19 or coronavirus disease, adding that the government would focus their intervention on the carriers of the disease as their plan was a “COVID-carrier centric“.
The said proposal came as the extension of the enhanced community quarantine in Metro Manila, Central Luzon (except Aurora), CALABARZON, Pangasinan, Benguet, Albay, Bacolod City, Iloilo province, Iloilo City, Cebu City, Cebu province, Zamboanga City, and Davao City was about to end on May 15, 2020. On the other hand, other areas already implemented the general community quarantine (GCQ).
Previously, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque warned the public that the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 was still there even if an area was under the general community quarantine.
The Philippines reported 292 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, 75 new recoveries, and 7 new fatalities as of 4:00 p.m. of May 11. This brought the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to 11,086, with 1,999 total recoveries and 726 total fatalities.
