PNP chief allowed gambling during wakes, but only allowing a maximum of two tables.
Revoking the order of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), the Philippine National Police (PNP) chief has allowed gambling during wakes.
This, as gambling sessions were normal during wakes in order to keep a 24-hour vigil over the dead person until the burial, thus, wakes were being used by the relatives of the dead person as an opportunity to hold gambling sessions.
Philippine National Police chief Gen. Archie Francisco Gamboa on Tuesday said that gambling during wakes were allowed, provided, that the PNP will only allow a maximum of two tables, with one for card games and one for the tile-based game mahjong. Gamboa added that all other games, including Bingo, “will not be allowed para klaro tayo.”
The directive of the PNP chief, in effect, revoked the order of NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas that banning all forms of gambling during wakes. Gamboa said that he came at the decision following a discussion with ranking police officials.
Aside from allowing gambling during wakes, the PNP chief also allowed cockfights, provided, that the games were held in cockpit arenas that were authorized by local government units.
