The cancellation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was “unthinkable”, according to the city governor of Tokyo.
The city governor of Tokyo on Thursday, March 11, said that the cancellation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was “unthinkable”.
This, as Yuriko Koike, the city governor of Tokyo, said that the classification of COVID-19 as a “pandemic” will likely have some impact on the Games. Yet, doubts were increasingly being raised over whether the Tokyo 2020 Olympics can be held as scheduled from July 24 to August 9, 2020.
Organizers, however, have insisted the Games will proceed as planned. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has stated that there has not yet been any talk of cancellation or postponement of the Games.
The IOC added that the committee will coordinate closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), which has now officially classified the COVID-19 outbreak as a “pandemic“.
