Saudi Arabia will host the world’s richest horse race, the Saudi Cup, offering USD 20 million in cash prizes in order to boost its battered global image.
This, as the Saudi Cup will be held at the King Abdulaziz Racetrack on February 29, expecting to attract about 10,000 spectators in the venue. The said race will feature its main race run over 1,800m on a dirt track with a maximum field of 14.
The winner for this year’s Saudi Cup will receive USD 10 million, second place with USD 3.5 million, and even the 10th place finisher will receive something from the competition. Also, the said cup will include another seven races on dirt and turf with USD 9.2 million worth of prices.
According to Tom Ryan, director of strategy and international racing at the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia, the host country was taking its first step on “a journey to bring the domestic racing product on a par with our international counterparts,” adding that the Saudi Cup will “increase the sport’s following inside Saudi Arabia, as well as opening up the industry to international horses and connections to make our mark on global racing.”
Meanwhile, Mugbel al-Zabni, a Saudi journalist who wrote for Arriyadiyah sports daily, reported that the Saudi Cup played the host country’s culture, where horses were considered a symbol of the country’s heritage.
