More than 620 out of 3,700 passengers onboard Diamond Princess cruise ship were tested positive for the 2019 novel coronavirus, named COVID-19, which has been quarantined since February 3. Citing a government source, NHK reported that the passengers were a man and a woman in their 80s.

The rapid spread of COVID-19 has sparked criticism of authorities just months before Tokyo was due to host this year’s Summer Olympics. Health Minister Katsunobu Kato told lawmakers that the officials have taken expert advice as well as responded to issues on a daily basis.

According to a health ministry official, about 500 passengers onboard Diamond Princess cruise ship were set to disembark on Thursday, while another 100 people were to leave for chartered flights home. In addition, the ministry could not confirm how many people remained onboard Japan cruise ship.
