In a report on Yugatech, Instagram officially announced a new way to protect users from abusive DMs, as well as the ability to avoid a previously blocked user from contacting them even in their new account.

Instagram introduced its new tool which will automatically filter direct message (DM) request containing offensive phrases, words, or emojis.

Users with a large following might have faced abuse in their DM request box from people they didn’t know or follow.

With that said, Instagram’s new tool focused on DM requests because, according to Instagram, this was where users usually received abusive messages — unlike the regular DM inbox — and it similarly worked like comment filters that were already offered.

Users can also turn both comment and direct message (DM) request filters on and off in a new dedicated section of their Privacy Settings called “Hidden Words”.

According to Instagram, they had been working with leading anti-bullying and anti-discrimination organizations in order to develop a predefined list of offensive phrases or words that will be filtered from DM requests.

All DM requests that contain those offensive phrases, words, or emojis will be automatically filtered into a separate hidden request folder.

Yugatech also reported that the said folder can be accessed and all messages text will be covered unless the user choosed to view it, which can then be either accepted, deleted, or reported.

Using Instagram’s “Hidden Words” feature didn’t share the content of their DM requests with Instagram unless reported. The said feature was expected to roll out in some countries in the upcoming weeks and will also expand to more countries over the next few months.

Aside from this, Instagram also introduced its new feature that enable users to block someone on Instagram and all possible accounts that the blocked user can create.

The said feature will be globally available in the upcoming weeks as this was in addition to the platform’s harassment policies — including repeated contact despite being blocked and recidivism.
